Pelvic Floor Training: it's more than just kegels

This blessing is so simple, comfy clothes and gentle weather are an easy ask - a strong pelvic floor on the other hand - well that one needs some work. Our pelvic floor muscles need to be strong and mobile enough to support our organs through the movements of everyday life. They also need to have the coordination and balance to open, release and close again. According to the NHS between 3 and 6 million people in the UK may have some degree of urinary incontinence, and 1 in 10 people may experience bowel incontinence at some point. If this is you I encourage you to ask your doctor to refer you to a pelvic health physiotherapist. There are specialists out there that can help.

Below are two classes that focus on understanding, mobilising and strengthening the pelvic floor.

I recommend that you pick a few of the exercises that you like best or can easily remember and try to do them every day. I’d also like to remind you that every part of our amazing bodies is connected, we are not just a sum of our parts. As this study shows movements as simple as brisk walking decrease the symptoms of urinary and faecal incontinence. So, please exercise your pelvic floor - but please also move your whole body, regularly. Having a strong active body will keep you healthy for longer and will also do wonders for your pelvic health.

👆🏽This video helps you understand what happens to the pelvic floor as you breathe. It helps you to understand how to breathe when picking up something heavy, or how to position your pelvis if you are about to sneeze and don't want to leak. It also has a range of exercises that target the pelvic floor.

👆🏽This video breaks the pelvic floor into three layers and shows you how to target each layer with a range of different exercises.

My lower back always feels marvellous after these classes but I have had feedback that they have helped reduce episodes of stress incontinence too. This is why I have put them here for you. May every jump be easy, may every sneeze leave your underwear dry.
